BMW introduces the fifth-generation X5 with five powertrain options

BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5, introducing the first model in the brand's lineup to support five different powertrain technologies within a single vehicle range. The new X5 will be available with petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and, at a later stage, hydrogen fuel-cell powertrains.


The model adopts BMW's latest Neue Klasse design language with a more upright front end, slimmer lighting elements and a simplified exterior. The signature kidney grille is positioned vertically and paired with new double-X daytime running lights. Flush door handles integrated into the bodywork contribute to cleaner side surfaces while retaining the X5's familiar proportions.



Inside, the cabin features BMW Panoramic iDrive with the new Operating System X. The dashboard integrates a panoramic display running across the base of the windscreen alongside a central touchscreen. An optional passenger display is also available, while physical controls have been reduced in favour of digital interfaces and multifunction steering wheel controls.



The battery-electric iX5 debuts with BMW's sixth-generation eDrive technology. The launch model, the iX5 60 xDrive, uses an 800-volt electrical architecture and new cylindrical battery cells. BMW claims a driving range of up to 845 km (WLTP), DC charging speeds of up to 460 kW and bidirectional charging capability.


The plug-in hybrid lineup includes the X5 50e xDrive and the performance-focused X5 M60e xDrive. Conventional petrol and diesel variants remain available, while a production hydrogen-powered iX5 Hydrogen will join the range later, expanding BMW's multi-powertrain strategy.


BMW has also increased the use of recycled and lower-carbon materials throughout the vehicle. Around half of the sheet steel used in the new X5 is produced using electric arc furnaces powered by renewable energy, while recycled aluminium and secondary raw materials are used across several structural components and battery materials.


Production of the new X5 will begin at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the United States. Petrol and diesel models are scheduled to reach global markets from late 2026, with plug-in hybrid and battery-electric versions following in early 2027.
