Design is one of the most critical and sought after skills in the world today. It doesn't matter what industry you are in, good design is a must. Design can be applied to everything from cars to fashion to furniture, from social media interfaces to infographics. The demand for designers will only continue to increase in the coming years. As Landscape of design education has changed drastically in recent years. With the advent of new technologies, designers are being asked to be versatile and adaptable to new demands. Nurturing talents, developing a strong skills base for the workforce and becoming globally competitive are some of the key challenges that confront design education in India.
The history of Indian Art goes back to 3rd century BCE. though Some people like to think Mughal Empire and British Raj really shaped Indian art, music, architecture and design, those claims are yet to be proven right .

In the mid-1800s, the first ever Indian school of art, Sir Jamsetjee Jejeebhoy School of Art, was established in Mumbai.
Kala Bhavan is another fine art institution established in Santiniketan by Rabindranath Tagore with his friend Nandalal Bose. It is now an autonomous institution providing a liberal arts education with an emphasis on visual art
However The design education system in India is not just broken, it's a disaster. With the design schools charging exorbitant fees and churning out graduates who are unprepared for the work environment, there's an urgent need of a radical change in the system.
How many are so many
India has the largest number of schools and universities teaching design in the world. The country is largely responsible for the global boom in design education that started in the 1950s. Most of the Design universities offer both 2-year and 4-year degrees, certification programs, and postgraduate programs. Students can choose to learn any aspect of design including animation, architecture, fashion, product design, textile designing etc.
India needs more employable designers for its growing economy and workforce. Design education in India has faced a lot many challenges over the past decade, one major challenge being a lack of skilled designers and talent. There is an increasing need for good employable talent but schools are falling short on that .Unfortunately, India does not have a very strong design education system that can produce these numbers. The number of students graduating with a degree in design has been increasing but it's still not enough when you compare that number with China's 3000 graduates every year. India hopes that with its partnerships with international universities they will be able to start training more talented designers domestically so they don't have to rely on outsourcing talent from abroad like they do.
Design has become a very competitive career option, one that requires apprenticeship and hard work to make it in the field. The issue with design education in India is that it is not accessible to everyone and unaffordable for many.
Only Few Institutes have been ranked as the best design institute in India, but what about the rest of the institutions? There are about 919 design schools in India; only 11 are recognized by their respective governments. Rest 898 unaccredited schools that offer no guarantee of quality and employability.
India has a number of colleges and universities that offer design courses, but they don't have the same prestige or recognition than other countries do - such as Canada or Germany. There's simply not enough resources allocated to design education.
It is important to note that while the number of design colleges in India has increased over the past decade, the standards of these institutions are not up to par. Many students are not getting enough practical and theoretical experience. This has led to an increasing amount of graduates with skills sets that are not yet ready for the job market.
Need to Rethink Educational Framework
A variety of stakeholders contribute to design education in India – educational institutions, faculty members, students, industry and society at large. We need to promote the study of design by introducing it as an academic discipline into schools and colleges, by providing more design-oriented courses at different levels and by designing curricula that meets educators’ needs.
The Indian government has been one of our most active consumers of design thinking, with initiatives such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan leading development processes across sectors. But there is a growing interest from corporates too, who have been hiring designers for everything from large-scale branding campaigns to product development.
It’s not just about the design process and how to do what we do, but also on how to live in the world that we are designing. We see a growing demand for various design fields from the corporate world and from the government.
Design education in India is not given enough attention and recognition in comparison to other countries and it has had a significant impact on the field of design.
The idea of design can be understood in many different ways. But the most important function of design is to solve problems.
Design education in India should focus on problem solving skills, research methods, critical thinking etc. so that designers can create meaningful and relevant products for the community
Designers should be "thinking about culture, emotions and human behavior,"

Automotive designer,
We strongly believe India's innovation is a holistic thinking process. It advocates long-term vision and responsibility towards our planet. Indian design exists beyond the obvious aesthetics value. It is an idea whose time has come.
