Ferrari has unveiled the 849 Testarossa, a plug-in hybrid berlinetta that replaces the SF90 Stradale at the top of the company’s range. Revealed in Milan, the car combines a re-engineered twin-turbo V8 with three electric motors to produce a total of 1,050 cv, making it the most powerful road car in Ferrari’s history.

The model revives the Testarossa name, first used in 1956 to describe the red cylinder head covers on Ferrari racing engines, and later made famous by the 1984 road car. With the new 849, Ferrari aims to blend its racing heritage with modern hybrid technology.

Power and Performance

At the heart of the car is an updated 3.9-litre V8, now producing 830 cv, 50 more than its predecessor. The unit has been extensively revised with a new turbocharger, redesigned cylinder heads, lightweight titanium components and an optimised exhaust system.

The hybrid system contributes an additional 220 cv through three motors: two on the front axle and one at the rear. Together they provide on-demand all-wheel drive and torque vectoring. A 7.45 kWh lithium-ion battery allows up to 25 km of electric-only driving.

Ferrari says the 849 achieves the best power-to-weight ratio of any car in its range, thanks to weight reduction measures that offset the added hybrid components.

Technology and Dynamics

The car debuts Ferrari’s new Integrated Vehicle Estimator, or FIVE, which creates a digital twin of the car in real time to improve control systems such as traction and braking. ABS Evo, adapted from the SF90 XX Stradale, allows later and more consistent braking.

Suspension and damper systems have been redesigned to improve grip, response and body control. Ferrari reports a 3 per cent increase in lateral performance compared to the SF90, with improved roll control and camber efficiency.

Aerodynamics and Design

Aerodynamic development focused on thermal efficiency and downforce. At 250 km/h, the 849 generates 415 kg of downforce, 25 kg more than the SF90 Stradale. The car features a new twin-tail design inspired by the 512 S and an active rear spoiler that can switch between low-drag and high-downforce settings in less than a second.

Styling was overseen by Ferrari’s design chief Flavio Manzoni. The sharp, geometric lines recall 1970s sports prototypes while incorporating modern aerodynamic ducts and intakes. Inside, the cockpit has been reconfigured with improved ergonomics, new HMI displays and a steering wheel featuring both analogue and digital controls.

Assetto Fiorano Package

An optional Assetto Fiorano version reduces weight by 30 kg using carbon fibre and titanium components, and introduces stiffer suspension and enhanced aerodynamic elements. Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, designed specifically for this variant, further increase grip and track performance.

Sound and Driving Modes

Ferrari has tuned the V8’s exhaust to deliver a more distinctive sound across the rev range, with new calibration strategies producing sharper tones during gearshifts. Four driving modes are available through the eManettino: eDrive, Hybrid, Performance and Qualify.

Personalisation and Aftercare

The 849 Testarossa can be customised with new exterior colours, including Rosso Fiammante and Giallo Ambra, and new Alcantara interiors such as Giallo Siena. Forged wheels are offered in several aerodynamic designs.

Ferrari also includes a seven-year maintenance programme and new hybrid warranty schemes. Buyers can extend cover up to 16 years, including free replacement of the high-voltage battery pack at specific intervals.

A New Benchmark

With its blend of historic references and cutting-edge hybrid technology, the 849 Testarossa sets a new benchmark for Ferrari. The company describes it as the ultimate expression of performance, refinement and driver engagement, designed for clients who expect the very best from Maranello.
