Pentagram has collaborated with KARRI, a London and Berlin based tech company, to design the second generation of its child-friendly voice messenger. Aimed at children aged 5–13, the device offers a safe, voice-only alternative to smartphones, empowering kids with independence while keeping parents connected and reassured.

The Challenge

The task for Pentagram was clear: refine the original KARRI messenger into a product that balances simplicity, durability, and playfulness. It had to be intuitive enough for children to use on their own, but also robust and secure enough to satisfy parental concerns.

Design Highlights

Slide-to-Talk

At the core of the interface is a slide-to-talk button. Inspired by walkie-talkies and modern messaging apps, it allows children to record, listen, send, and delete voice messages with a single, tactile motion.

Compact, Kid-Focused Form

The messenger is pocket-sized and durable, designed to withstand everyday use. A LED matrix display provides clear, minimal feedback without unnecessary distractions. Accessories like a silicone bumper case and lanyard add both protection and a playful, sporty touch.

Purposeful Features

Beyond messaging, the device integrates useful tools:

  • Built-in flashlight

  • GPS tracking and geo-fencing

  • Battery and network status updates

Together, these ensure the messenger is not only fun but also functional, enhancing independence for children while reassuring caregivers.

The Design Process

Pentagram’s industrial design team worked closely with families and children, using research and prototype testing to shape every detail. Each decision was informed by real-world use, ensuring that the product met genuine needs rather than assumptions.

Launch Timeline

The KARRI Generation 2 messenger is set for release in early 2026 and is currently available for presale through karri.io.

Conclusion

KARRI Generation 2 is more than a gadget. It is a design solution that rethinks how children communicate in the digital age. By combining intuitive interaction, playful design, and practical safety features, Pentagram and KARRI have created a messenger that represents independence for kids and peace of mind for parents.
